Frenford's Summer Jam

Summer Jamming with 70 Years of Frenford Youth

The power of volunteering and young people was on show at Frenford Clubs on Sunday 8th August. 75 young people from the borough helped make the event a runaway success.
To celebrate the achievements of 80 years of Frenford's Youth Club, Frenford's Youth Committee joined forces with the vinvolved's Redbridge Youth Action Team to host Summer JAM, the ultimate youth event this summer!
This was the first time that the two teams of young people have collaborated and worked together. They organised Frenford's Summer Jam to put on an event for the whole community; young and old.
Rebecca Awan from the Youth Action Team said "it was initially a little nerve wracking working with a new team, but as time progressed and we got to know each other we learnt to work together. It was great to work with the Youth Committee and witness how passionate they are about the club. We managed to pull of a really successful event together! The two teams also managed to engage an additional 55 young people as volunteers on the day."
Alex Hinds, a Youth Action Team member who compered the event added "after months of planning it was fantastic to see everything come together on day. And we all played a part in that."

The young people had organised and arranged a range of activities for locals to get involved in on the day, including; street dance, graffiti, face painting, football, cricket, Wii and Playstation tournaments to name a few. There was also information stalls from vinvolved East London, Frenford Clubs, St Johns Ambulance and PCSO Safer Neighbourhoods.
Frenford's Club is moving to new premises at the end of the year, the event was a thank you to everyone who has made Frenford's an outstanding success!

Irfan Shah of Frenford Clubs commented; "To witness 'young people' plan and execute an event with over 50 plus young volunteers, has to be one of the most satisfying highlights of my time as a youth worker. The Frenford's Youth committee and the Redbridge Youth Action Team supported by Frenford, vinvolved East London, Changemakers and BTCV have made this event possible but notably a success. People approached me at the event and were extremely complimentary towards the young people who were volunteering at the event. This gives Frenford great hype as we approach a much anticipated move to the drive in October. I only hope that this event will be highlighted as much as the negatives surrounding young people usually are. Young people must be supported more now than ever as they face a steep rise in unemployment and I see volunteering as a tool to bridge the gap to employment."

Newham Youth Action Team host Shanti International Fundraising Day

Saturday saw Newham’s Youth Action Team dangling above the streets of Newham in the sunshine – all for a good cause, naturally. The Newham Action Fun Day was run by the young people of the Newham Youth Action Team run by vinvolved East London in Outdoors in the City, which brings extreme sports and activities to the local community. Sponsored zip wire leaps, bungee jumps, tug of war battles and sumo challenges were undertaken to raise money for Shanti International. There was a barbeque and even live acoustic music.

Over Eighty people came along, keen to take on physical challenges and raise money, and over £1,500 was collected for Shanti International to help build wells in India and also to help this local community venue in Canning Town- Outdoors in the City.

“It was a brilliant day, and I’ve never done anything like that before, it was nice that it was so close and that we did it for charity” says local resident and  Youth Action Team member Jennifer Mallari (featured in the photo) who celebrated her 18th birthday on the day with a jump.  “The young people did a fantastic job of organizing it, everyone was really happy with it and we had such a good time.” Says Emma Holtz who works for Changemakers with Bryan Precious from the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers to support the Youth Action Team to carry out local projects in Newham.

The North East London Youth Action Team bring to you...

This is an event to raise money for "The Dream Factory", a charity that helps to make the dreams come true for those with life threatening illnesses or severe disability aged between 3 - 25 yrs old.

The charity been running for 2 years now, and have already made the dreams of 42 people come true.

Patrons Include: Ray Winestone, Patsy Palmer, Vicki Michelle, Michelle Collins, Rt. Hon. Iain Duncun Smith, Dr Rory McRae, Larry & Dorean Golding.

So what we, the Youth Action Team, are doing is a three-legged sponsored walk encircling Valentines Park and as many times as it takes (minimum 5km)! And to give it a special touch, as this is of course no ordinary three-legged sponsored walk, we'll be doing it in our pyjamas! Some of us will even be parading in ADULT BABY GROWS!

The wackier the better, and remember we're doing this not just to be silly, but to make the dreams of seriously ill children come true. We are asking for a minimum of £10 worth of sponsorships to take part in the event. Bear in mind that could be something as simple as £1 from 10 people or £2 from 5 people. But we have full faith that you're all so much more convincing and motivated to raise more than just £10!

And of course, the more money you are able to collect, the more dreams you will be granting. So please get involved!

For a sponsorship form or if you have any queries, please email us on nelondon.youthactionteam@gmail.com.This event will take place on Sunday 11th of April between 2.30 and 5pm!

As well as this, we at the YAT, have decided on a briefing date, for all volunteers who wish to take part in one form or another which include: sponsored walk participants, stewards and general volunteers. This briefing will take place at The Downshall Centre On Wednesday 7th April between 6:30- 8:30pm.

Happy Computers: Apprenticeship for IT Users- Become Proficient in IT in Your Job!

Free Training for Your Staff, Aged 19-24

Happy Computers is proud to offer your organisation fully funded training, towards a level 2 qualification, for staff aged between 19 and 24 – provided they don’t have degrees.

IT User Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are high quality work related training programmes for those that want to improve their IT skills and develop their future prospects and career. In doing an Apprenticeship for IT Users you will gain a valuable qualification and gain transferable skills that will enable you to succeed in your chosen career. On successful completion of the programme you will receive City & Guilds certificates.

An Apprenticeship is a programme of learning and development that gives you the skills, knowledge and competence you need for your job. The programme consists of:

• An NVQ for IT Users (ITQ) – this proves your competence of using IT in your job.

• Key Skills (Communication & Application of Numbers) - these give you the underlying skills you will need in business

• Employment Rights and Responsibilities –ensures that you know the key rights and responsibilities you have whilst at work.

The apprenticeship includes an initial assessment to help identify your current level of IT skills, what you need to know for your job, and what you know already.

Length:

10 days of classroom training, plus one-to-one coaching & support

Timescale:

5 -12 months, depending on existing level of IT skills

Cost:

Free

To Qualify:

Must be EU citizen, be in employment, aged 19-24 and not have a degree

Requirements:

Must be confident in using a keyboard, Windows and a mouse. Additionally you must have used Word before and be familiar with entering text and using common features in Word. This is a level 2 qualification and not suitable for beginners.

Classroom Training Included

The core qualification includes the following classroom courses, each one day in length:

• Word • Excel

• Outlook • MS Publisher

• Access • PowerPoint

• Applying numerical skills in the workplace

• Improving your communication skills

• Evidence Workshop

The course consists of 10 one day sessions, one held each fortnight. Each training session includes a step-by-step manual and two years use of our telephone help-line, free of charge, on anything covered by your courses. You will also have full access to online learning materials, if you wish.

Your Portfolio: What you will be able to do:

To complete the apprenticeship you will need to produce pieces of work, to demonstrate your ability to use your new skills in your job. Examples could include:

PowerPoint: Create a presentation about your organisation, including images & automated slides.

Excel: Create a budget spreadsheet, including formulas and charts.

Word: Create a report, including images, Tables and Headers & Footers.

MS Publisher: Create newsletters and leaflets.

Email: Create an email distribution list, use attachments, signature, out of office and schedule meetings.

Access: Create a database, create queries using criteria, create and format reports.

These are examples. If any of them are not relevant to your job, you will instead produce work that is.

Free Bonus Course

Learners will be offered any course from the Happy Computers schedule, free of charge, once they complete the apprenticeship and achieve the qualification. Examples are 2 or 3 days courses in the following software:

• Dreamweaver • MS Project • Flash

• In Design • Sage • MS Expression Web

• Photoshop • Train the Trainer • Excel VBA

Why is it free? Where’s the catch?

There is genuinely no cost. It is a key priority for the government to increase IT skills in the workplace and Apprenticeships are the way it wants to achieve them. The qualification is therefore fully funded by the Learning and Skills Council.

Your commitment is to attend all the courses and complete your portfolio of work. This is vital: you will only achieve the certificate, and get the benefit of the courses, if you do the work.

Our guarantee:

You will be hugely more confident and more capable in using your computer by the time you achieve your qualification.

Youth Action Team- Leadership & Empowerment Training

The YAT members attended a workshop run by Kaizen on Leadership & Empowerment. This fantastic workshop opened them up to new ideas and opportunities to recognise the positive, as well as negative attributes their roles as volunteers, and as individuals, entail. It was also a great opportunity to meet other Youth Action Team members across the other boroughs and find out what they were doing and how they got involved.

Here is what Alex Hinds, a YAT member from the North East team thought of it:

"I just want to talk a little about the Leadership and Empowerment Training which took place on the 30th - 31st January 2010 in East London. The training spread over the weekend challenged us in various skills we use in everyday life such as speaking, doing as we say and the judgement we have of others. The training as I am sure all who were there would agree challenged us to overcome our pre-conceptions of people which would re-enforce our beliefs of people. We were also led to discover that leadership is not just about a head who commands subordinates, it’s about taking a step back sometimes, realising that the best leaders are those who listen to the team, take aboard ideas and are always willing to learn more themselves.

Perhaps most importantly was to do what you say. In life we always say we are going to do something even if we sometimes don't mean it. However, what we say may affect others or our relationships with others. The training told us to not just say yes for the sake of it but to mean what you say. By keeping to your word, people are able to trust your ability to act on it which in turn builds a solid and stable personal or working relationship in whatever environment you are in.

Here are some pictures of the event for your viewing pleasure to see how the day went.

I look forward to the many exciting events we have lined up."

CASE STUDY: Who is it? Alike Jeffs, Dats who!

Initially I just want to congratulate you guys at v-befree on all that you are doing, I am extremley proud and honoured to be affliated and able to contribute via my talents. To be honest I'm not totally sure on what I intend to gain from this message but if there's one thing I've learnt in life it is to make the most out of every situation and never under estimate the possibilities of what could happen, it's better to try than to do nothing at all, so below is some 'inf' (info) about what I do plus links.
So... Introducing - Alike Jeffs

I am "a young, talented, upcoming musician, an artist by the name 'Infecta'" (Logan Sama KISS 100). And I focus mainly on vocals so whether that be Gospel, Poetry, Grime, Spoken Word, Rap, Singing, Song writing etc. am about it, plus I've had experience in all fields I've mentioned.
Recently in this struggle to get out there I been doing things to take my music career further via; performances, music videos, events / public appearances and many more... also due to the way I've been brought up I do a lot of youth work with all sorts of positive companies such as; Prince's Trust, BPA (Black Police Association), ssp(safer southwark partnership), Kickstart, f4L(Foundation 4 Life) etc.

From all these things - the network around me is now strong enough to start spreading my music, exp. I linked up with a Producer overseas in Latin America and managed to work on one song within his album (Color TV) which was released by two labels; 'Sinewave' in Brasil & 'Diablero' in Mexico. But I am still living in a deprived region of South East London and so find it difficult to push my music out there.

Also have been making a lot of different music that all ages can listen to by working with organizations such as; London Sinfonietta, artist like; John Cage and poets such as Michael Groce and through the influence of my surroundings mixed with experiences from the past e.g. The Southbank Project: SOWF (some other way forward) & Street Genius.

Just worth mentioning I also do modeling, acting, designing. Recently did an advert for Pepsi, I'm also close to receiving a sponsorship by Nike but right now am currently working on building a Portfolio based on Designers/Apparel in UK. Whether that be T-Shirts to full Clothing Lines. Am also working on designing my own Tees which will allow those that own one to make it unique by customizing the front to display their name etc. with the theme being "We are what we wear." & "supporting supporters."

Commercially I have made a few TV Appearances this year including; Channel 4, BBC, SKY1 & ITV & also performed on the same stage alongside artist such as; Chipmunk, Bashy, Ghetts, N-Dubz, Tinchy Stryder etc. (on Festivals like 'The Mix 09') but at my age of 18 (recently) it's easy for me to become misunderstood so although in all I spread positive messages sometimes my musical gift has still been over looked.

To listen to my songs, or watch videos, view my pictures or find out more about me just check me on the net;

Mayor of London: Taking London Forward

Taking London Forward
27 January

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson today (January 27) announced that he is to reorganise and refocus his team to concentrate on the delivery and implementation of plans, developed over the last two years, to improve London.

Since his election, the Mayor has delivered strategies for key areas such as transport, housing, economy, environment, sport and serious youth violence, approved budgets and put in place brand new systems at City Hall to drive this work forward.

With these solid foundations now in place, the Mayor has taken the decision to sharpen his team's energies on delivering these promises. As part of this step change, he is proposing Deputy Mayor for Policing Kit Malthouse as Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority. As Vice Chair of the MPA for the last two years, Kit Malthouse has a vast knowledge of policing issues in the capital and is committed to delivering the best police force for London. The direct line of accountability between the Metropolitan Police Service and the people of London will remain with the Mayor who was democratically elected with a mandate over policing.

The Mayor also believes that, as an independent body of experts working to improve policing in London, the MPA should put party politics aside. To this end, he is proposing Reshard Auladin OBE, a well-respected independent voice on the MPA, as Vice-Chair to work alongside Kit Malthouse.

No Mayor can afford to be complacent about crime and Boris Johnson is clear that it remains his top priority. While no longer overseeing the day-to-day operation of the MPA, the Mayor will be more involved than ever, having fortnightly meetings with the Commissioner and his senior staff, as well as embarking on a systematic programme of visits to crime hotspots in the capital, speaking directly to the people affected and the officers working on the ground.

The Mayor is also proposing Assembly Member for Bexley and Bromley, James Cleverly, as Chair of the Waste and Recycling Board. He'll oversee an £84m budget and drive forward ambitious plans to end London's poor record on recycling.

James, a former soldier, is widely respected as a diligent representative of outer London as well as an effective board member of both the LDA and the MPA. He will also draw on the excellent success of Bexley and Bromley as pioneers in the field of recycling in his new role.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "Two years into my job as Mayor, I am increasingly confident that I have the right structures and policies in place and the best people with the vision and drive to truly make London the best big city in the world. To enable us to crack crime, give our young people the opportunities they deserve, clean up the environment and improve quality of life in our capital, we need a relentless, single-minded focus to drive home our advantage. I firmly believe Kit Malthouse, Reshard Auladin OBE and James Cleverly have the credentials, commitment and rigorous determination to meet these challenges head on."

Subject to the Assembly's confirmation hearing James Cleverly will stand down from his role as the Mayor's Youth Ambassador. The Mayor is very grateful to James for his contribution to this role, in particular his invaluable work to deliver the new Heron Wing for first time offenders at Feltham.

Lizzie Noel, who was recently appointed Advisor on Social Action and Volunteering as part of the Mayor's drive to boost volunteering across the capital, will now be taking forward You London, which will engage young people in structured activities. Pamela Chesters, Mayor's Advisor Health and Youth Opportunities, is already establishing the Mayor's Academies to set new standards in education provision in London. She will also lead on the Mayor's Scholars programme, to give children in care the opportunities normally associated with more privileged families, with the first scholars to be identified in the spring.

In addition the Mayor also announced that Christopher Garnett is to step down from his position as non-statutory Deputy Chairman on the Transport for London Board because of his increasing role as Chair of the Olympic and Paralympics Transport Board, although he will remain a Transport for London Board member. Daniel Moylan will remain as Deputy Chairman bringing the full benefit of his commitment to the board.

Notes:

The Mayor has written to the Assembly today notifying them of his intent to appoint Deputy Mayor Kit Malthouse to Chair of the MPA and Assembly Member James Cleverly to Chair of the Waste and Recycling Board.
The Assembly have three weeks to make their recommendations on the appointments to the Mayor.
